Emergency Tooth Extraction

Same-day and next-day emergency tooth removal when you cannot wait. We are here when you need us.

When Is an Emergency Extraction Needed?

A dental emergency can happen at any time — a sudden toothache that keeps you up at night, a sports injury that cracks a tooth, or an infection that causes dangerous swelling. When a tooth is too damaged or infected to be saved, emergency extraction is the fastest way to relieve pain and protect your health.

Common reasons for emergency tooth extraction include:

  • Severe tooth pain that does not respond to over-the-counter medication
  • A tooth that is cracked, fractured, or broken below the gum line
  • An abscess (pocket of infection) at the root of a tooth
  • Swelling in the face, jaw, or neck caused by a dental infection
  • A tooth that has been knocked out or loosened by trauma
  • Advanced decay that has destroyed most of the tooth structure

What to Do Before You Get Here

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, here are some steps to take while you arrange to see us:

  • For severe pain: Take over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil) as directed on the package. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the painful area.
  • For a knocked-out tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. If possible, gently place it back in the socket. If not, keep it moist in milk or saliva and get to our office as quickly as possible.
  • For swelling or infection: Do not apply heat. A warm saltwater rinse (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) can help. If swelling is severe or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room.
  • For a broken tooth: Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Save any pieces of the tooth and bring them with you.

Then call our office at (713) 555-1234. We reserve time in our schedule every day for emergency patients and will do our best to see you the same day or next day.

What to Expect During an Emergency Extraction

When you arrive for an emergency extraction, our first priority is to get you out of pain. Here is what the process looks like:

  • Evaluation: We take an X-ray or 3D scan to assess the tooth and surrounding bone. We check for signs of infection and determine the best extraction approach.
  • Anesthesia: We numb the area completely with local anesthesia. If you are anxious or the case is complex, sedation options are available.
  • Extraction: The tooth is carefully removed. If an infection is present, we may drain it and prescribe antibiotics.
  • Aftercare: We place gauze, provide detailed instructions, and prescribe any necessary medications. If you are interested in replacing the tooth with a dental implant, we can discuss that plan during your follow-up visit.

After Your Emergency Extraction

Recovery from a simple extraction is usually quick — most patients feel significantly better within 24 to 48 hours. Here is what to expect:

  • First 24 hours: Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding. Avoid spitting, using a straw, or smoking, as these can dislodge the blood clot. Eat soft, cool foods.
  • Day 2–3: Swelling and discomfort begin to decrease. Continue taking medications as prescribed.
  • Day 4–7: Most patients are back to normal activities. The extraction site continues to heal over the next several weeks.

Once you have healed, we will discuss your options for replacing the missing tooth. Dental implants are the most popular and long-lasting option, but we will help you choose the solution that fits your needs and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

We do our best to see emergency patients the same day you call. We reserve time in our schedule specifically for urgent cases. Call us at (713) 555-1234 and let us know it is an emergency.

A simple emergency extraction in Houston typically costs between $150 and $400. Surgical extractions for impacted or broken teeth may cost more. We will give you a clear cost estimate before proceeding.

For most dental emergencies, an oral surgeon is the better choice — we have the specialized training and equipment to treat the problem definitively. However, if you have severe swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, or if you have uncontrolled bleeding, go to the ER first.

In most cases, yes — replacing a missing tooth prevents the surrounding teeth from shifting and the jawbone from deteriorating. We can discuss options like dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures during your follow-up visit.
